Typical East/West Coast Miscommunication With Strangers Summarized in One Interaction

Scene: Outdoor area of Pike Place market in Seattle. East Coaster (EC) is walking with a friend in a crowded marketplace.

EC (out loud to friend): I wonder if there's a Starbucks around here? I could really use a Starbucks coffee right about now.

Strangers nearby: There's one right back there.
EC: Um . . . Oh. Thanks . . . I was kidding.
Strangers: Oh. [BEAT]. Haha! I was like, what is she talking about? There's one on every corner!
EC (quietly to friend): How come no one ever realizes I'm being sarcastic?
