Do Us a Flavor: Alaska Style

OK Alaska. Listen up, and listen up good.

There's some BIG news on the snack scene right now, and this is a call to arms/dehydrated flavor dust for ALL Alaskans to step up their flavor game and win our state $1 Million and immortal snack chip glory!

The Frito Lay Company is currently running a contest where fans of the Lay's potato chip are being asked to submit their ideas for "the next great Lay's potato chip flavor." See: "

For the 2015 contest, the "brand is changing up their game plan and asking fans to include the location that inspired each possible million-dollar idea." Once the idea is submitted, "a judging panel made up of chefs, foodies, and flavor experts will narrow down the contest submission to four regionally inspired finalist flavors to be fully developed and brought to market this summer."

We as Alaskans simply CANNOT miss this light, crispy, golden opportunity! Especially in times of budget crunches (no pun intended) and declining oil prices (including fry-o-later oil) we all need to do our part to earn an extra million bucks for The Last Frontier, along with the regional pride that comes with kicking ass in the Frito Lay "Do Us a Flavor" potato chip flavor-making contest.

Last year's winner was "Lay's Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger" with the runners-up being "Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese," "Cappuccino," and "Mango Salsa."

Well, those flavors are wack, and they are going DOWN in 2015. Personally, I think Alaska can do much better this year.

To get you all going, I'm doing my part by submitting the following dozen flavor suggestions, which are by no means exhaustive, nor should they limit your creativity.

I will leave it to capable others to actually cook up and develop these flavors, since cooking for me these days pretty much means putting a frozen Aidell's Chicken Apple Sausage from Costco in the microwave and pressing Cook Time/1:30/Start.

Here are the flavor contenders:

1.  Spaghetti N' Mooseballs
2.  Ling Cod N' Lemon
3.  Chinook Salmon N' Dill
4.  King Crab N' Drawn Butter
5.  Akutaq N' Blueberry
6.  Caribou N' Onion
7.  Reindeer Sausage N' Peppers
8.  Highbush Cranberry Sauce N' Ptarmigan (Thanksgiving Limited Edition)
9.  Spot Prawn N' Pickled Kelp (a.k.a. Beach Asparagus)
10. Fiddlehead Fern N' Panko
11. MatSu Valley Potato N' Giant Kolrabi (MatSu tater based! Alaska Grown, dawgs!)
12. Weathervane Scallop N' Balsamic Reduction

BONUS FLAVOR in light of Alaska's recent marijuana legalization: Pot Brownie?

Come on people! Do Alaska proud! And ... GO!

  1. Maple bacon donut from Breeze Inn would be a good, local flavor.

    or maybe,

Bong hit 4 Jesus. Well, maybe not.

    Just my suggestions.
